Use four different shade to create the gradient effect, as suggested, or just use the same color combination for all the blocks. The transparency effect will still be evident.
Difficulty rating is medium because it requires intermediate skill levels (mainly for accurate piecing due to matching diagonal seams). Otherwise, it is a fairly easy quilt to put together.
